A New Just Cause Game Is Being Made, Says Developer

When you think of Square Enix, chances are, the first series that come to mind are likely to be Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts. All of those are brilliant, of course, but they do tend to overshadow some of the publisher’s other greats.

There’s no need to be mysterious about it since it’s already in the headline - I’m talking about Just Cause. The first game in the series was released on PC, PS2, original Xbox, and Xbox 360 back in 2006, and was a pretty great open-world action-adventure title. Since then, we’ve seen the release of a further three sequels, with the most recent coming out in 2018. Now, Square Enix have offhandedly confirmed that a new instalment is on the way.

In case you missed it, earlier this year, Kingdom Hearts 4 got officially revealed - take a look at the trailer below.

As reported by PC Gamer, the news was revealed in a financial results briefing last month - you can check out the document here. The document discusses Square Enix’s massive $300 million sale of some of its IP and studios, clarifying what their plans are for the future.

“[The transaction’s] primary purpose was a reorientation of our portfolio,” Yosuke Matsuda, president of Square Enix wrote. “We especially revisited our studio and title portfolios from the perspective of stepping up our offering of online titles that we develop for the North American and the European market. We want to focus on creating new titles that align with our strategy, including ones that leverage new IP. The JUST CAUSE franchise will remain our IP, and we are at work developing a new title in the franchise.”

There you have it - a new title is in development. It’s worth keeping in mind that we already knew a mobile Just Cause game was on the way and scheduled to release this year, but given that’s already been officially announced and has a name (admittedly, not a very interesting one - it’s Just Cause Mobile), it’d be strange for it not to be specifically mentioned if this is the one they meant, rather than a whole new unannounced game. Stranger things have happened, though, so please hype responsibly.
