Star Trek Is Getting A New Game From Ex-Telltale Developers

Dramatic Labs, a studio founded by several former developers at Telltale Games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones, Minecraft: Story Mode), has revealed that it’s working on a new Star Trek game. Named Star Trek: Resurgence, it is (reports GameSpot) a third-person narrative adventure set in the year 2380, immediately after the events of the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series.

The studio - which sells itself on its official website as “an independent collaboration of writers, developers, designers, artists, and producers who are passionate about the future of interactive storytelling” - announced Star Trek: Resurgence at the 2021 Game Awards. And they had a trailer, too, which you can watch below.

Star Trek: Resurgence is an original story set in the Star Trek universe. More precisely, its action will be largely set aboard the U.S.S. Resolute, and there will be two playable characters in the game: first officer Jara Rydek and engineer Carter Diaz. The pair will attempt to prevent a war from breaking out between two alien factions, and the story will incorporate appearances from well-known Star Trek characters, as the trailer makes pretty clear. (Unless that isn’t Spock? That is Spock, right?)

As noted by GameSpot, the team at Dramatic Labs features a wealth of former Telltale talent, including the defunct studio’s lead writer and creative director Andrew Grant, another former lead writer in Dan Martin, and cinematic director Kent Mudle. Suffice to say, this will play out much like a classic Telltale Games adventure. Dramatic Labs founder Kevin Bruner issued a brief statement on the game, as follows:

“As fans of Star Trek, it's truly an honour to be crafting a story which puts players right in the heart of the action, where significant choices and decisions will affect the entire narrative. Built from the ground up using Epic's Unreal engine and our proprietary narrative engine, this game showcases our team's evolution in creating thought-provoking story-rich adventures.”

Star Trek: Resurgence will be released for PC (exclusive to the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox consoles, in early to mid 2022. Telltale fans… Yeah, we’ve got a good feeling about this one.
