Star Wars: Battlefront 3 update leaves fans heartbroken

Star Wars: Battlefront 3 update leaves fans heartbroken

A former Star Wars: Battlefront III dev has revealed that the game was incredibly close to being completed when it was cancelled.

Given that it’s been well over a decade since Star Wars: Battlefront III was cancelled, it’s probably safe to say that most fans of the original series are pretty much over it. Sure, it’s sad that it never released, but hey. You win some and you lose some, right?

Unfortunately, as Game Rant reports, lead designer at Naughty Dog, Michael Barclay, who also served as a level designer at Free Radical Design during Star Wars: Battlefront III’s development (for the single-player and multiplayer modes), has now revealed just how close we were to getting an exceptional game. Reader, it was so close that it hurts.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on 28 April - take a look at the trailer below.

Over on Twitter, joining in on a thread for game devs to share their stories of the games “that got away”, Barclay wrote: “I feel like it’s been long enough now to come out and say Star Wars: Battlefront III was gonna be legit incredible and the fact it got cancelled two yards from the finish line is an absolute crime. Gamers don’t know what they were robbed of.”

As you’d imagine, the thought of what we lost hasn’t gone down well with fans of the series: “Aw man, this was my most anticipated game ever. I had [3,000+] hours of game on the original Battlefront II. It is the game that made me discover game modding then 3D art. I even joined a Battlefront game fan project back then! Such a shame it never got released, it looked fantastic,” @lodaligae replied. “This saddens me. BFII was honestly a great game and did not get the credit it deserved,” wrote @vaulthunter426.

Of course, since then, Star Wars: Battlefront series has been given a modern reboot - the rebooted Star Wars: Battlefront II released in 2017. Perhaps that means that Battlefront III could eventually be released in some capacity? We can only hope.
