New Stranger Things game lets you play as Vecna and murder everyone

Stranger Things VR is releasing in winter 2023, and will see players take on the role of Vecna.

Yesterday (6 November) was Stranger Things Day - the anniversary of the date that everyone’s favourite bowl cut-rocking lad Will Byers went missing and dragged into the Upside Down in the events of the show’s first season.

In celebration of the day (which sounds a bit weird given what it commemorates), a whole bunch of cool stuff was announced, including the episode title for the first episode of season five. It’s called ‘The Crawl’, which sounds very ominous and I’m already concerned. Unfortunately, the release date for the next season still hasn’t been announced, so we’ll just have to be patient.

While you’re here, take a look at some amazing behind-the-scenes footage from Stranger Things’ fourth season below (beware of spoilers if you’re not caught up).

Anyway, one of the more unexpected announcements was the reveal of Stranger Things VR - a new VR game (who’d have guessed?) coming next winter. Surprisingly, players won’t be teaming up with Eleven and the gang to take down the threats from the Upside Down - they’ll actually take on the role of Vecna. Take a look at the short teaser below.

All the gameplay clips shown were super short, but interestingly, we can see that Vecna gets attacked by a couple of demodogs, and also appears to use his powers on one, so perhaps even the Upside Down’s most powerful threat is still susceptible to getting munched. Who knows why this is the case - perhaps it’s a strange alternate universe where Vecna gets a redemption arc? Either way, it’s a really interesting concept, and fans are sure to be excited to see how it all plays out.

Just last month, Netflix’s Mike Verdu hinted that fans should look out for a “definitive Stranger Things game coming at some point, too, so it sounds like there’s even more to look forward to in the future.
