The Callisto Protocol has made some bold claims to date. The upcoming horror title from Dead Space developer Glen Schofield promises to be “the single most scariest game for PC and consoles.”

In defense of the game, the teases that we’ve seen so far of The Callisto Protocol’s monsters sure do look terrifying so they could be on to something. The game is in development at Striking Distance Studios and is due to be published by Krafton. Originally, the game was set within Krafton’s PUBG universe but that is no longer the case.

Schofield took to Twitter to confirm the change. He tweeted, “FYI [The Callisto Protocol] is its own story and world. It no longer takes place in the PUBG universe. It was originally part of the PUBG timeline, but grew into its own world. PUBG is awesome, [and] we will still have little surprises for fans, but [The Callisto Protocol] is its own world, story and universe.”

The original plan was for The Callisto Protocol to be set 300 years after the events of PUBG although given both the time-jump and the stark tonal differences between the two games, it’s hard to imagine what would have linked them.

The Callisto Protocol is set aboard the Black Iron Prison located on one of Jupiter’s moons, Callisto. It’s a single-player experience that we otherwise know very little about, but it clearly entails encountering horrifying monsters.

The game is yet to receive a full reveal since it was announced back at The Game Awards in 2020. The teams did confirm just a few weeks ago that it’s still scheduled to release at some point this year. We’ve got a bunch of major gaming showcases just around the corner so news could be coming very soon.
