'The Mandalorian' Star Wants To Direct Star Wars Movie, "Let It Happen Today"

'The Mandalorian' Star Wants To Direct Star Wars Movie, "Let It Happen Today"

Well, they didn't beat around the bush with that answer!

As announced at the recent Star Wars Celebration held by Disney in Anaheim, California - The Mandalorian season three is set to air on Disney+ in February 2023. Fans at the event were even treated to a sneak peek at the show, where a lot of characters and plot points were revealed.

One of the returning characters from the first two seasons is very keen to explore the possibilities of directing a Star Wars film or TV show of their own in the near future, as GAMINGbible found out.

Before we find out exactly who it is and why, check out this awesome life-size build of Mando’s ship, the Razor Crest.

Carl Weathers is a name that some people might not immediately know, but the odds are high that you’re aware of his work before The Mandalorian - playing such iconic roles as Dillon in Predator, Apollo Creed in Rocky IV and most recently Greef Karga in the Star Wars show. GAMINGbible spoke to the cast of The Mandalorian about the show (you can read that here) but Weathers expressed particular interest in stepping behind the camera.

“From your mouth to god’s ear, let it happen today, okay? Yes!” Weathers said on the idea of directing a Star Wars project in the future. “First of all, I am such a fan, and have become a greater fan of the Star Wars brand, the galaxy. Clearly with The Mandalorian, Jon [Favreau] and Dave [Filoni] and now Rick [Famuyiwa] are dipping their toes in stuff that is… For want of a better word, so much more accessible on a human level. Great characters who were tangential characters or smaller characters - Mando being one of them, Ahsoka being one of them and of course Boba Fett - who wouldn’t want to [direct a film]? And especially with this technology that exists so that you can create these magnificent worlds. I think the truth is I have learned more about directing and producing since the first season of this show than in all the existing time prior to it. I’m working with people who are some of the best in the business. They’re generous and you don’t feel like they hold back, they want you to be good. That’s cool.”

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to people who know their Mando facts - Weathers already directed episode 12 of the second season of the show and has a string of other acting, directing and producing credits to his name. If ever there was going to be a Star Wars movie focused around the themes of boxing and fighting extraterrestrial alien threats, I’d want Carl Weathers overseeing the project, wouldn’t you?
