New Horror 'The Quarry' Gets Chilling Reveal Trailer

Until Dawn is still considered one of the finest horror games of the last decade, and rightly so. Wrapping up a schlocky teen horror flick in a video game package proved to be on the money from developers Supermassive Games. They then followed that success with episodic The Dark Pictures Anthology which received somewhat less fanfare, but still stuck true to the core principles of its big brother - namely that of choice.

Now, the freshly announced title The Quarry looks set to continue Supermassive’s tradition of movie-style horror games that puts you, the player, firmly in the hot seat.

The game is set in Hackett’s Quarry on the last day of summer camp. The camp’s teenage counsellors are letting off some steam and partying the only way teenagers know how - far too much alcohol and unleashing their raging hormones. If you’ve ever even heard of a horror movie before, you’ll be unsurprised to hear that this doesn’t exactly end well.

The game’s press release states that our heroes will be “hunted by blood-drenched locals and something far more sinister.” Sounds terrifying so far. “The teens' party plans unravel into an unpredictable night of horror. Friendly banter and flirtations give way to life-or-death decisions, as relationships build or break under the strain of unimaginable choices.”

The ensemble cast - as all Supermassive games are - is jam-packed with celebrities who have been digitally plopped into the middle of their worst nightmares. Actors like David Arquette (Scream franchise), Ariel Winters (Modern Family), Justice Smith (Jurassic World), Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Lin Shaye (A Nightmare On Elm Street) and many more are set to make an appearance.

What makes The Quarry unique among its predecessors, is that any of the nine camp counsellors you’ll be playing as can become the hero of the story, depending on your actions. Naturally, they can also die horrible, horrible deaths. Every choice will apparently count in getting them safely to see another day.

As is the case in past Supermassive games, you’ll be able to play with others online, but only if they also have the same gen console as you do. That means no cross-play between Xbox Series X/S and PS5s, or new gen and old gen consoles. If couch co-op is more your thing, you’ll be able to gather with friends, each pick a counsellor, and play the game taking it in turns in your fight for survival.

There’s also the intriguing Movie Mode, where you can apparently set your preferences for what might happen, then kick back and watch events unfold like a film. You can set your difficulty as high or low as you like, so the experience is tailored toward your preferences.

The Quarry will release on June 10, 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Windows PC via Steam.
