'The Simpsons Hit And Run' Remake Adds Brilliant 'GTA 5' Feature

'The Simpsons Hit And Run' Remake Adds Brilliant 'GTA 5' Feature

This is too cool

Gamers of a certain generation will always have a soft spot for The Simpsons Hit And Run, and it's not hard to see why.

Released way back in 2003, developer Radical Entertainment's dazzlingly simple premise of The Simpsons crossed with Grand Theft Auto proved to be a smash-hit.

Suddenly players were able to explore their favourite Springfield haunts via a number of semi-open sandbox areas. Characters and gags from the show were packed into every inch of the world. It was a blast, basically.

Alas, despite the fact that The Simpsons Hit And Run is actually one of the most in-demand video game remakes of all time, we're probably never going to see one made.

The good news is one talented YouTuber by the name of reubs has been busy rebuilding the game himself - even bringing it up to modern standards by combining the smaller open areas into one larger open world.

The YouTuber has made impressive progress, using Unreal Engine 5 to bring Springfield to life and even adding in working vehicles and a new first-person mode. Brilliantly, he's now decided to take things further still by adding in one of the best features from Grand Theft Auto V - seamless character switching.

As reubs explains in this video, they noticed while coding the game's camera that the bird-eye view was very similar to the way the camera zooms out in GTA V as players switch between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. Inspired, he chose to replicate this very feature for Hit And Run, demonstrating a neat little transition in which the camera instantly flies away from Homer and closes in on Marge.

While we're probably never going to be lucky enough to play reubs' project for ourselves, it really is amazing to see just what a remake of Hit And Run might look like. And in the unlikely scenario such a game is ever officially greenlit? They better give reubs a call.
