Now there’s a headline for you, and no, it’s not an exaggeration. I hope you’re a fan of fluffy, blue, CGI hedgehogs and their equally colourful friends, because we’re apparently set to be getting a whole load more Sonic movies in the future.

As reported by PSU, Toby Ascher, the producer for both the first Sonic movie and its soon-to-be-released sequel, has threatened us all with a full blown SCU: “We’re creating a Sonic Cinematic Universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world.”

Before we go on, be sure to check out GAMINGbible's chat with Sonic and Tails themselves about the upcoming Sonic movie sequel.

When you think about it, there’s a lot of scope for more Sonic characters to be introduced to screen. Although the blue blur himself, alongside Tails, Knuckles and Eggman are pretty indisputably the main four, there’s so many more to pick from. I mean, what about Shadow? Surely he’s got to be in the next film, right? Metal Sonic would also make for a pretty neat villain choice, and poor Amy has also yet to make an appearance, so you’d think she’d be due for her debut sometime soon. There’s also tonnes of slightly more obscure choices like Big the Cat and Rouge the Bat, although I’m not sure if Paramount would be prepared to raise the movie’s age rating so that she could be included in her, uh, unadulterated state, let’s say.

There’s also no doubt that as long as the movies remain successful, they’re gonna keep coming, and believe it or not, the first Sonic film remains to this day the highest grossing video game movie of all time (thanks, Box Office Mojo). So far, it seems like the sequel has a fairly decent chance to top that, too - in GAMINGbible’s review, we said that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a “tremendously enjoyable film”, and that “it’s hilarious, full of action, brimming with references to the games, and undoubtedly better than the first film.”

If you’re excited for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, there’s not long at all to wait now - it’s speeding onto cinema screens on 1 April in the UK, and 8 April in the US.
