The Witcher 3 finally lets you pet Roach, and now the game is perfect

It's what she deserves.

The new-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt now lets players pet Roach, a feature that was scandalously absent from the original release, and Geralt is able to thank the horse for all of her patience, courage and tenacity taking him into mortal danger. It's the least we could do to be honest.

The update includes a whole host of changes like ray traced global illumination, ambient occlusion, 4K textures for characters like Geralt, Yennefer, Triss and more, fan-favourite mods, and a fast travel point in Crow's Perch. Thank goodness for that, eh? Since the update was released, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has rocketed through the ranks to become one of the highest rated games of the year, and players both new and old are discovering new details that reinvigorate the RPG. The ability to pat Roach is the most important of them all. Easily.

CD Projekt Red's global PR director Radek Grabowski showed off the new feature in a gameplay video for those who hadn't learned that this was an addition. It wasn't stated in the patch notes so you could totally see how a returning player could have overlooked this in their helter-skelter approach to sidequests.

Truthfully, Roach is not the best horse on the Continent. She's capricious, becomes panicky at inopportune moments, and is occasionally distracted, which isn't the most useful roster of traits for a monster hunter's companion. "In truth, though, he was very attached to her and would never trade her for any other horse," reveals the entry about the character in the journal in the game. "Not even one which, when summoned, would never stand helpless in front of a seemingly easily surmountable obstacle, such as a low fence or stray piece of timber. Nor even one which would sometimes, in some incomprehensible fashion, wind up dancing on some peasant's roof."
