The Witcher: 80 percent of fans say they won't watch without Henry Cavill

A new poll reveals just how many fans are willing to boycott Netflix's The Witcher following Henry Cavill's departure.

The fallout continues. Yes, I’m talking about the fact that Henry Cavill has officially departed from Netflix’s The Witcher. Cavill made the announcement a few days ago, revealing that Liam Hemsworth would be replacing him in the role. Cavill’s third (and final) season is set to air next year, with Hemsworth taking up the mantle for season four.

Cavill hasn’t expressed exactly what led to the decision but he’s been very outspoken about his love for Andrzej Sapokowski’s novels. One former writer on Netflix’s The Witcher recently revealed that staff on the show had mocked the books, leading many fans to assume that Cavill left due to these creative differences. Already, fans have started a petition asking Netflix to fire the writers and rehire Cavill. It’s ambitious, yet unlikely. That being said, it looks like a huge number of people will be boycotting the show.

Twitter account Culture Crave recently polled followers on whether they’d continue to watch The Witcher following Cavill’s departure. A whopping 81.9% declared that they wouldn’t while just 18.1% said that they’d carry on watching. According to Culture Crave, 201,000 votes were cast in the poll. This means that 164,619 voted to remain loyal to Cavill. It’s a testament to the actor’s impact on fans of the franchise.

I do wonder if Liam Hemsworth knew just what a storm he’d be walking into by taking on this role. Over on Instagram, the actor wrote, “As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Fans are already imagining what the actor may look like in full Geralt garb. Bottom line is, we still have one more season to enjoy with Cavill in the saddle. For now, that’ll have to do.
