The second season of The Witcher is here - I've not seen it yet so settle down with any spoilers. In fact, if you're in the same boat, this whole article will be spoiler free because we're going to be talking about the behind-the-scenes parts of the show. A recent report claims that actor Henry Cavill has been paid twice what he was earning per episode for The Witcher in 2019.
Signed onto films like Argylle, Enola Holmes 2, Highlander and The Rosie Project, Cavill is strutting some serious star power right now. Yet, when this is brought up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor isn't fazed by all of the attention. “Something has changed, something has shifted,” said Cavill. “After 21 years of hard work, I have three jobs lined up. Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s my approach, maybe my value as a commodity increases being attached to things like The Witcher. Now I can really focus on the storytelling and grow from here.”

Storytelling is certainly his passion and he's hinted that he'd leap at the chance to star in a Red Dead Redemption or Mass Effect adaptation, should those ever come into existence. He's also keen on doing his stunts himself as he has said that belief in a character is solidified once the viewer sees that it is the actor putting themselves through the paces of their respective role. Of his time filming Mission Impossible Fallout, he admitted that it does take a toll on your psyche and his injury that he suffered on the set of The Witcher was the "worst moment" of his year.
Alright, alright, we get it. He's committed. For that personal quality, it looks like Netflix was content to renegotiate his pay. The Hollywood Reporter asserts that Cavill is now paid double what he was paid for the first season of the show. Variety said that he was taking home $400,000 for every episode, totalling $3.2 million for the first season. If those sources are correct, then the actor gets $1 million for every episode, working out to be $8 million all in all.
Ahead of the release of the second season, we got the chance to chat to Joey Batey and Freya Allan about how their (very different) characters have transformed from when we saw them last. If you're au fait with the series of books, you might think you know the answers to those questions, however, the show will be exploring new sides of these established personas. "Lauren does deviate from the texts, and I know that for some fans that won't be their favourite thing," said Batey. "But as someone who's involved in the show, I applaud it. And I applaud her ambition, and her ability to kind of read the lay of the land and go, 'Well, what do we want to make the show about? Is it really dragons and elves and swords? Or do we want to take things that are actually important in our world now?' And hopefully, in some small, quiet way, help people and do some good work."
