When I was young I remember looking at the all-new PlayStation 2 and thinking, this is it. I couldn’t conceive of graphics which would ever look better than they do on that console.
I was of course very wrong. Yet every generation of console which is released never fails to delight and surprise us with what the new technology can achieve. Epic Games started unveiling its all-new engine last year, but it was only recently that it was made available to everyone. Since then, numerous games have been announced as in development in the engine. From the next Tomb Raider game, to the upcoming Witcher title - studios have been eagerly adopting the latest engine with its photo realistic graphics.

One reddit user has shown off some of the latest effects possible in the new engine. User u/defalt9989 demonstrated how lighting in the engine works dynamically. Showing off a simple room with a window and chair, defalt9989 demonstrates how the shadow of the chair moves with the object, a new feature since Unreal Engine 4.
Another boon of the latest engine is how the lighting reacts when objects are placed blocking the light source. When placing a block in front of the window, the engine shifts the room into darkness automatically, without the need for the user to change the shade manually. Even partially obscuring the window lights up the room in all the right places.
While this only shows off a snippet of what can be done in Epic’s new engine we are thoroughly excited to see the games which are going to be made in it.
