TikTok Set To Start Releasing Games, After Testing Gets Underway

There’s no denying that the gaming industry is booming, and it seems like everyone wants in. Over the past few years, a number of brands have hopped on over into the gaming space in search of a piece of the action. You can’t blame them. A recent report suggested that the average gamer spends a whopping $58,000 (£45,600) on gaming during their lifetime.

A couple of years ago, Amazon solidified their place in the gaming sector after rebranding Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming. More recently, Netflix launched their own gaming platform which is available to all mobile subscribers. It now looks like TikTok is next in line after recent reports confirm that the social media giant is set to start releasing games.

According to a report by Reuters, four unnamed sources have confirmed that TikTok have been conducting tests in Vietnam which allow users to play games within the video-sharing social media app. TikTok may soon expand the test across Southeast Asia before the end of the year.

The sources wished to remain anonymous as it’s not a move that TikTok has yet publicly broadcasted. A TikTok representative did comment on the company’s previous tests to bring HTML5 games to the social media app. TikTok hopes to use tie-ups and third-party developers like Zynga Inc to bring gaming to its users.

In a statement provided to Reuters, TikTok said, “We're always looking at ways to enrich our platform and regularly test new features and integrations that bring value to our community,” which doesn’t give much away.

It’s not yet known if the tests will expand worldwide but TikTok’s latest move hardly comes as a surprise. TikTok reportedly has over one billion users, so it makes sense that a large portion of those users would be interested in accessing some form of gaming content.
