Tom Cruise shows off 'biggest stunt in cinema history' for Mission Impossible

It’s no secret that Tom Cruise is an adrenaline junkie. The man will do anything, it seems. It’s not a Tom Cruise film without a life-threatening stunt but that’s particularly true of the Mission Impossible film series. In fact, for the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, Cruise has taken on the “biggest stunt in cinema history”.

This deserves a build-up. Let’s just take into account the wild feats that Cruise has already taken on. He scaled the side of the Burj Khalifa in Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, clung onto the side of a plane in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, plus leapt between buildings during the filming of Mission: Impossible Fall Out - which did actually result in the actor breaking his foot. Would you believe me if I said this latest stunt made those look tame?

The stunt was actually filmed back in September 2020 in Hellesylt, Norway, so the good news is that we know Cruise completed the stunt and was okay. The actor said the stunt had been in the works for years and is something he’d wanted to do “since he was a little kid”. To warm up for the stunt, Cruise would casually jump out of a helicopter - as you do.

As pointed out by one of the stunt coordinators, Cruise had to ensure he didn’t fall off the ramp or get tangled in the bike during his free fall, plus open his parachute correctly in order to avoid death. What’s even wilder is that Cruise ended up carrying out the stunt six times in order to get the perfect shot. Director Christopher McQuarrie even teased that something even scarier is planned for Mission 8. I am lost for words.
