Andre Braugher, known for his iconically deadpan role of Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died at the age of 61.
His publicist confirmed that the actor died on Monday after suffering from a “brief illness”, although the specifics of that illness haven’t been revealed.
Despite the majority of us recognising Braugher from his time as Captain Holt, his one-liners arguably what made the show so incredibly enjoyable and funny, Braugher first grabbed the attention of viewers in the NBC show Homicide: Life on the Street, with him winning an Emmy in 1998.

In total, Braugher was nominated for 11 Emmy’s over the course of his career, with him winning another for his role in Thief in 2006.
Naturally, with leaving behind such a legacy, and for being known as such a genuinely kind friend, the outpouring of love and respect for the actor has dominated social media. "I’m honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared eight glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts,” read a post from Brooklyn Nine-Nine colleague and friend, Terry Crews.

“You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. [My] deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”
Other fellow actors also added their condolences, such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Chelsea Peretti, who said, “Will miss your dulcet tones. Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat.”
But actor Marc Evan Jackson, best known for his role as Captain Holt’s husband, really hit home the wave of emotions being felt by simply posting, “O Captain. My Captain.”
Losing such a great actor, one we feel as if we personally know, is never easy. However, the memories they leave behind offer comfort that will last a lifetime.
