HBO's The Last Of Us has found its Abby, showrunner teases

I know I’m not the only one desperately awaiting news on season two of HBO’s The Last of Us. Abby is undoubtedly my favourite character in gaming so I’m unsurprisingly keen to see who will be bringing her to life. Well, according to showrunner Craig Mazin, we’re one step closer to finding out who it will be.

Production on The Last of Us has temporarily ground to a halt. Originally, this was due to the WGA strike but now, of course, SAG-AFTRA is striking too. Mazin previously confirmed that prior to the WGA strike, writing on season two had begun - as had casting. Fans are convinced they know who is bringing Abby to life, actress Shannon Berry, but we certainly don’t have official confirmation. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter though, Mazin teased a few new tidbits about the show including that it’ll last for at least four seasons and that they’ve seemingly found their Abby.

When asked if the role had been cast, Mazin replied, “Maybe,” with a laugh. He explained, “The strike stopped us in our tracks. Things were in process. Look, Abby was the first role that we wanted to tackle. We’ve got a pretty good track record of making major cast announcements and people going, 'Really?' which will probably continue. So people may disagree, but I think we got it right so far and the audience seems to feel we got it right and the Academy seems to feel we got it right."

Very interesting. Mazin is clearly referring to the fact that neither Pedro Pascal or Bella Ramsey cropped in in fancasts, with both stars receiving some backlash to being cast. I don’t need to remind anyone that they both nailed it though, hence why Mazin refers to the Academy and the vast number of Emmy nominations the show has received.

If Abby is an unexpected casting then, perhaps Berry is off the cards. I know Florence Pugh’s name has cropped up a lot too, but I can’t see her balancing Bella on screen as an adversary. We’ll have to wait a little longer for confirmation but I’ll confess, I’m envious of whoever is eventually gifted this gem of a role.
