Jim Carrey is reportedly set to return in The Grinch 2

Jim Carrey will apparently reprise his role as The Grinch in a direct sequel to the 2000 live-action film.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) is one of those must-watch movies during the festive season, and while the animated version starring Benedict Cumberbatch was pretty good, Jim Carrey’s depiction of the Dr Seuss character will always be the best.

Now in a surprising turn of events, it’s believed a sequel to the live-action film is on the way, and it’s reported Jim Carrey will be returning to wear the green makeup once again, something that he’s compared to torture in the past.

Earlier this year, the publication Giant Freaking Robot reported Carrey would be reprising his role, saying "Jim Carrey is returning to Universal Pictures for The Grinch 2, once again playing Dr. Seuss’s most famous and ill-tempered creation."

Obviously, nothing has been officially confirmed by Universal Pictures as of yet, so this needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but if it’s credible, it’s great news especially since Carrey recently teased his retirement.

The real question is what would a sequel even look like? The original story is about The Grinch attempting to steal Christmas, only to understand the true meaning of the holiday and put things right. By the end of the tale, his heart has grown in size and he’s a good person, so what else could be left for him after that?

Maybe a new face will threaten Christmas, prompting The Grinch and his friends to prevent another festive disaster, or maybe he’ll be back to his old ways again following another traumatic event.

Either way, it’d be nice to see Carrey return to one of his most beloved portrayals, especially if each film he does from now on could very well be his last prior to his retirement from the big screen.
