Ubisoft has officially announced its own play-to-earn gaming venture, called Ubisoft Quartz, which will let players grab limited-edition cosmetic items for its roster of live titles to then be sold to third-party marketplaces in exchange for cryptocurrency. Cor. Really gets you going, doesn't it?

The company's curiosity in cryptocurrency emerged in its most recent financial report, and most of us had hoped it was only curiosity. "[Blockchain] will enable more play-to-earn that will enable more players to actually earn content, own content, and we think it’s going to grow the industry quite a lot," said chief financial officer Frédérick Duguet. "We’ve been working with lots of small companies going on blockchain and we’re starting to have a good know-how on how it can impact the industry, and we want to be one of the key players here."

Regrettably, the four years of Ubisoft's exploration into the potential power of blockchain technology has borne fruit. The beta for Ubisoft Quartz rolls out on December 9th for Ghost Recon Breakpoint, as per the announcement. These Digits (also known as NFTs) use energy-efficient technology and are entirely individual with a certificate of ownership that allows players to be a part of the game's history. I am dizzy with the possibilities of owning my very own gun in Ghost Recon Breakpoint. One that has a very volatile monetary value as soon as I want to sell it to someone else.

"Digits are a new way to experience cosmetic items, combining the fun of playing with AAA quality assets and the thrill of owning NFTs that represent unique, collectible pieces of Ubisoft game worlds," read the press release from the company. "Digits are collectible in-game vehicles, weapons, and pieces of equipment that offer players unprecedented ways to connect with and enjoy more value from the games they love."

Regarding the energy expenditure, Ubisoft Quartz relies on Tezos instead of the traditional Bitcoin or Ethereum for a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. “Ubisoft Quartz is the first building block in our ambitious vision for developing a true metaverse," said Nicolas Pouard, vice president of Ubisoft's Strategic Innovation Lab. "And it can’t come to life without overcoming blockchain’s early-form limitations for gaming, including scalability and energy consumption.”

If you are actually excited for Digits, then I'll give you the lowdown. Three Digits will be freebies to snap up on Thursday: a ‘Wolves’ skin for the M4A1 Tactical rifle, a pair of trousers and a helmet in Ghost Recon Breakpoint for PC. These will be released on December 9th, 12th and 15th and will be a limited time offer. Moreover, a player must have completed certain criteria in order to nab these - the 'Wolves' skin is only available to level 5 players, the trousers to those who've sunk 100 hours into the game, and the helmet is for those who've got 600 hours to their name. Still excited? Yeah, I thought so.
