Ubisoft Turning Off Multiplayer Services For Some Games, Fans Unhappy

Ubisoft has announced it will be closing down online functionality - and therefore multiplayer - for 15 of its games from September 1st, which will prohibit the ability to buy and download DLC for them, too.

In a blog post written by the company, it says that it must "focus resources on delivering great experiences for players who are playing newer or more popular titles." That feels like a big oof moment for anybody who likes playing older games with their friends, but it will also prohibit the ability to play some single-player content while online, too.

As you’ll likely have deduced by the above paragraph, the majority of games will be older titles, but that hasn’t stopped some fans being disgruntled by the announcement. Over on the r/gaming subreddit, folks have been offering up their thoughts on the matter, and they’re not positive. “I mean, I wouldn't expect online services to be available forever,” says u/merkk. “But not being able to play solo content, that's bullsh*t.” This is but one of over a thousand comments, but the sentiment is pretty much universally echoed.

As you can see, there’s quite a few very popular titles on that list. The very thin silver lining, though, is that if you own remastered copies of Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed 2, their content won’t be affected. Still, there’s a lot of great games on that list, and a lot of fond memories playing them with friends. As mentioned, the decommissioning won’t happen until September 1st, so you’d better make time now if you’ve been meaning to play any of these classic titles.
