'Uncharted' Movie Sequels Confirmed By Sony, Whether We Want Them Or Not

So, Uncharted sure did happen, huh? The general consensus has been a bit mixed, to say the least, which I think is probably what we all expected to happen. While the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes isn't bad at all, critics have been, for the most part, ripping the movie to shreds. We were a bit more generous, describing it as “a good-time movie, guaranteed to make most who see it smile” in our review.
Regardless of how you feel about it though, it sounds like this is only the beginning of Nate and Sully’s big-screen adventures. As reported by Deadline, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman (whew, that’s a mouthful) revealed in a companywide email yesterday that Uncharted isn’t just a one-off film, but actually the start of a “new hit movie franchise”.

“With over $100M in box office worldwide in just one weekend, and a 90% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company,” Rothman wrote. “This marks a great victory for every single division of the company, as the film was our first major production entirely shut down by the advent of Covid, yet we persevered to complete a picture the audience loves and marketed and distributed it with strategic verve worldwide, despite the pandemic.”
While this isn’t confirmation of a sequel already being in the works, it definitely sounds like it’s planned for there to be one, if not more in the future. That was almost certainly going to be the case if it did well - and let’s face it, sticking Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg in basically anything was always going to spell success regardless of the actual quality of the film.
That said, Uncharted has been doing even better than expected. Not only did it fly to the top of the UK’s box office charts, but in the US it took home $44.1 million on its opening weekend alone. As of now, it’s earned $106 million worldwide, and given that it’s only been out in cinemas everywhere as of last Friday, that's nothing to be sniffed at. Looks like we’re going to have to get used to Holland’s Nathan Drake, and fast.
