Twisted Unreal Engine 5 open world horror looks weirder than Death Stranding

Unreal Engine 5 open world horror Hell Is Us drops you in the world with no map nor compass.

We’re in the final month of the year, which means it’s time to reflect on yet another stellar 12 months of game releases - something we’ll certainly be doing at The Game Awards this coming Thursday, 7 December.

Beyond that, you might be thinking ahead about what you’re most excited for in 2024. We know that The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Alone in the Dark, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 are on the way, to name but a few. It’s expected that we’ll get a few more release dates at The Game Awards. For example, Death Stranding 2 is heavily rumoured to be included in the show’s line-up with a late 2024 release date. If so much of 2024 is so uncertain then, is it silly to look ahead to 2025? Maybe, but I’m going to do it anyway because the upcoming horror Hell Is Us is shaping up nicely.

Take a look at the trailer for Hell is Us below.

When I say shaping up nicely, it’s also hard to know exactly what is going on in Hell Is Us because it’s clearly been to the Hideo Kojima School of Confusing, à la Death Stranding. Developed by Rogue Factor and set to be published by Nacon, the synopsis reads, “If war is the closest we get to hell on earth, it's because Earth harbours the worst of demons: humankind. In an isolated country ravaged by infighting, discover the secrets of your past and deal with the repercussions of a mysterious calamity.”

Very vague. What I can tell you is that Hell Is Us is a single-player third-person semi open world RPG that “combines intense melee combat with the thrill of exploration”. The world you inhabit is being plagued by a so-called calamity, giving rise to supernatural creatures. You guessed it. It’s up to you to defeat these creatures, whilst simultaneously unravelling why they are there.

Hell Is Us features no map, no quest markers, nor a compass so you’ll need to rely on gut feeling and instinct alone to guide you. Throughout your journey, you’ll acquire swords, spears, and axes plus you have a handy drone to help you in your fight. I’m very intrigued. We’ve got a wait to go, but this is a title worth keeping an eye on.
