Upcoming Horror 'Martha Is Dead' Developer Censors Game Per PlayStation's Request

We aren't sure what the concerning content is that caused PlayStation to ask for changes.

Martha Is Dead, one of the most exciting horror games of this year, has been censored as per PlayStation's request and so the physical release of the title will be delayed by a few weeks.

Set in Italy towards the end of the Second World War, the game is a dark first-person psychological thriller promising to delve into the depths of spirituality, superstition and tragedy during one of the most harrowing moments in world history. The desecrated body of Martha, a young German girl, is found floating in the water and her twin sister Giulia must grapple with the terror of war and the trauma of her sister's sudden and gruesome death. To understand what truly happened to her, Giulia will step into the shadows of her own secrets as well as those of her family's, transporting the player through an affecting story told through tarot, marionette theatre and traditional folklore.

Here is the trailer for the upcoming game!

"Martha Is Dead is only recommended for an adult audience and is not recommended for players who may find depictions containing blood, dismemberment, disfigurement of human bodies, minor nudity, and self-harm disturbing," reads the statement on the game's Steam entry. However, it seems like PlayStation has reviewed the depth of the content of Martha Is Dead and found it to be too concerning for its storefront. Speaking in a statement published to Twitter, publisher Wired Productions expressed its "regret" that certain things in the game have had to be rescinded and it transpires that "some elements [are] no longer playable" in the PlayStation version.

"Developer LKA now requires extra time to make these unplanned changes," explained Wired Productions. "Martha Is Dead, as a result, will still launch digitally on both PS5 and PS4 on Thursday, February 24th, 2022, but the physical retail release will be delayed to a yet to be disclosed date." And, just to be sure everyone's on the same page, the PC and Xbox versions of the horror will remain in line with LKA and Wired Productions' original vision. We aren't sure what specifically has caused PlayStation to request changes as horror as a genre does dive into extremely graphic or disturbing tropes. While it is unusual, this might be a good way for people who are sensitive to certain content to side-step triggers while still enjoying the storytelling experience of Martha Is Dead.
