Warcraft Is Going Mobile This Year, Says Blizzard

It sounds like Blizzard have a rather busy year ahead of them, with a load of Warcraft stuff on the way, as well as the development of a mystery new IP. 

This news was tucked away in a quarterly earnings report, which I promise you is a nightmare to read, so let’s jump straight to the juicy stuff: “Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time,” Activision Blizzard wrote. “Blizzard is making strong progress on its pipeline, including new experiences in Warcraft, ongoing development in Diablo and Overwatch, and an exciting new IP.”

So, even though that was only two sentences, there’s a lot to unpack here. Hearthstone is, of course, an existing Warcraft franchise game which is available on mobile devices, but it’s far from the original World of Warcraft experience. While this new mobile content could definitely be a straight-up mobile version of WoW, the specification of “new experiences in Warcraft” certainly implies this could be a whole new thing altogether.

Also, can we just mention the “exciting new IP” part? Chances are, this is referring to the upcoming Blizzard survival game which was announced at the end of last month, which we know even less about, apart from the fact that this will be set in a brand new universe, with completely new characters and stories.

Unfortunately, this is the only information we have to go on at the minute, although at the very least we do know that we can expect to see whatever the Warcraft developments are sometime this year. 

Last month, the internet came together to help out a poor 70-year-old dad, who’d been unfairly banned from World of Warcraft after being mistaken for a bot. Thanks to going viral on Reddit, a Blizzard employee spotted the post, and was able to help him get his account back. Aww. Things like that give me small glimmers of hope that the internet is good sometimes, actually.
