So, The Wheel of Time sure seems to be having a good year, doesn’t it? The fantasy novel series saw its most recent instalment published back in 2013 - but this year not only did it get a TV adaptation released on Amazon Prime, but now it looks like it’ll be getting a new video game, too.
Author Brandon Sanderson, who took over the series in 2007 when the original author, Robert Jordan, passed away, recently confirmed in a blog post that he’s been working on a game for The Wheel of Time for a while now, and it’s probably going to be announced in the coming year. Exciting!

“I’ve been working on a video game for several years, and I suspect it will be announced this year. So, commence speculation!” he wrote. “Note: it’s not for one of my properties, but something new that I built with them. It’s a game company many of you will have heard of, but probably not the one you’re thinking about right now. Not that other one either.”

It’s worth noting here that there should be emphasis on it being a new game - the first Wheel of Time game, which was a first person shooter, actually came out in 1999 on PC. Not that I imagine that was a staple title in anyone’s gaming library, so you’d be forgiven for thinking the upcoming game would be the first of its kind.
The author also mentioned the Prime Video series in his blog post, saying: “I don’t agree with all of the decisions made in the creation (and it includes some content that I find objectionable). However, I do like the team working on it, and I feel they’ve listened to my voice as I’ve advocated for a lot of things behind the scenes.”
The first season of the Prime Video series began on 19 November, with the sixth and final episode set to air tomorrow, 24 December (nice Christmas Eve treat, there). However, a second series has already been green-lit, so that’s far from the end of it - we just don’t know when we’ll be seeing that, yet. Apparently, filming began in July this year, so that’s something.
As for this upcoming game, though, we’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled next year for any news on that front. It’ll be interesting to see who ends up making it, with it apparently being a company we’ll have heard of. Only time (please laugh) will tell.
