Who Is The Wolf In New 'God Of War Ragnarök' Trailer, And What It Means For Kratos

The gods have finally answered our prayers, by which I mean Santa Monica Studio have finally announced the release date for God of War Ragnarök. For months now, fans have been fervently speculating - which is to put it lightly - but we now know the game is due to be released on 9 November, 2022.

That’s not the only news. Fans can soon pre-order a very cool Jötnar Edition of the game which comes with a 16 inch replica of Thor’s hammer. Weirdly though, it does not come with a physical version of the game, so make of that what you will. Santa Monica Studio also dropped a juicy new trailer and whilst it’s pretty short, it could contain a massive tease about what’s to come.

In the trailer, we see Kratos and Atreus fighting with the familiar Draugr and Hel-Walkers, before Kratos is knocked into a dark canyon where he finds a very large black wolf. Based on what we know of Norse mythology, we can assume this to be Fenrir.

Fenrir is the son of the god Loki and a giantess by the name of Angerboda. This, at the present time, doesn’t make sense in relation to God of War Ragnarök. We know that Atreus is Loki, but it’s unlikely that 14-year-old Atreus has a son for obvious reasons. That being said, it looks like Fenrir’s origin details will likely have been changed, but the role Fenrir plays in Ragnarök could still be the same.

As a powerful entity, Fenrir was bound by the gods with a chain made with the sound of a cat’s footsteps … seriously. The delicate padding of a kitty’s tiny lil’ foot pads is Norse lore. During this time, Fenrir bit off the hand of Tyr (who we know will feature in God of War Ragnarök) and was destined to lie in his bonds till Ragnarök began.

According to myth, Fenrir did indeed rise up during Ragnarök, devouring the sun and swallowing Odin. There’s much to digest here - and I don’t mean Odin in Fenrir’s belly. In the trailer, the canyon that Kratos finds Fenrir in is noticeably darker than the other environments featured, so this could play into the ‘devours the sun’ part of the legend. We also know that Odin is an enemy of Kratos, so whilst Fenrir is certainly framed as a villain in the new trailer, could he be an ally to Kratos just like The World Serpent?

You may have missed it, but right at the beginning of the trailer, we see two ravens briefly fly overhead of Kratos and Atreus. Odin’s ravens featured throughout 2018’s God of War but these annoying collectables were more apparitions, and not the real Huginn and Munninn. 

The duo seen in this new trailer certainly look like the real McCoy. It makes sense that Odin’s primary informants would be used now that Ragnarök has officially begun, as Odin would want to know if Kratos had Fenrir on his side given the prophecies surrounding Ragnarök. We have much to dwell on.
