Season 2 of Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher was released at the end of last year (after a pandemic hiatus), and since then we've been spoiled by the animated Nightmare of the Wolf, and news of the prequel series Blood Origin. Despite this, fans are desperate for the third mainline season - and they have good reason to be.
Netflix's adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels has been a slow burner for the past two seasons, but the pace may start to accelerate in the third. As fans of the novels and games will know, a turning point is on its way as we reach the magical island of Thanedd. Spoilers ahead!

The story will start to pick up here, primarily because of a pivotal moment on the island: the Thanedd coup. It's a scene of bloodshed to rival Game of Thrones' Red Wedding, so it should be a staggering scene in itself, but it serves as a catalyst for something else. Due to the power vacuum caused by the deaths of all these mages, Vilgefortz will step up as the series' main antagonist.

If you're a Witcher buff, you'll know that it's during this arc that one of the most epic duels of the whole saga occurs. The fight between Geralt and Vilgefortz is iconic, and those who have read the books must be excited, but also nervous. Nervous because it just has to be done right.
By the looks of things, they can rest assured it's going to be both epic and accurate. A photograph leaked from set to the fan page redanianintelligence.com shows actors Mahesh Jadu (or potentially a stunt double) and Henry Cavil as Vilgefortz and Geralt respectively, battling it out on location at Three Cliffs Bay, Wales. As Vilgefortz has his staff, and not the blades, it looks like Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich is sticking to the source material.
