Fans Finds Xbox Series X Has A Game-Changing Download Feature

The Xbox Series X has a groovy feature for those of us who still buy physical copies of games: it lets you install that game so that when the disc arrives, you start straight away.

It's inspired, to be honest. While others prefer the instantaneousness of a digital download, there's something about getting your mitts on a physical copy that just scratches that itch. Perhaps, it's a prehistoric instinct to hoard in preparation for those long winter nights, when the sun sets in the middle of the afternoon. Perhaps, it's the satisfaction of lining the boxes up in an aesthetically pleasing fashion. That cabinet from IKEA was pretty pricey after all, and you should use it for more than storing the Wii and its accessories. No shame here. Or, perhaps purchasing the physical copy got you a boatload of physical and digital goodies, like a giant wolf that you can ride while travelling through medieval England.

Anyway. Jamie Moran, a gaming YouTuber who focuses on the Xbox, opened our eyes to a very cool feature of the Xbox Series X. Essentially, even if you've opted for the physical version of a game and you're waiting on the disc, you will already be able to install it onto the console. As a result, all you'll have to do is insert the disc and you'll be away, wreaking havoc in Night City or mixing Coldplay's Clocks with Evanescence's Bring Me to Life. The response to the revelation is (expectedly) feverish, with those who thought they'd be trailing behind now in the same shoes as those who bought a digital version of a game.

Moran has also provided instructions for those who want to try it out. You'll need to download and log into the Xbox App on your phone or smart device, for starters. Then, scroll to the game that you want. There will be a big green button that says "download to console," along with a caveat that the "game [is] sold separately." So, you're essentially downloading the content for free, but you'll need to prove that you've paid for the game before it unlocks for you. Standard stuff, and this will be no sweat if you've got the receipt. And, the download doesn't include the day one patches for upcoming games, just for your information. Moran says that it's a "new ish" feature on the app, and it works for a lot of the games on there.

Cool, right? The Xbox Series X has a number of features that revolutionise our expectations for gaming. For example, Quick Resume is what it says on the tin, and lets players effortlessly switch between ongoing games, and picks up right where they left off. Ideal for times when you're chilling with a single-player title, then your buddy comes over, and you're back in Borderlands 3 co-op in the blink of an eye. Tom is very impressed with the console, and you can read what he thought about it right here.
