Game Pass Could Come To PlayStation And Switch, Says Xbox Boss

It's no secret that Xbox Game Pass is one of the better deals out there. For £7.99 a month, Xbox One owners can download and play a pretty massive library of classic Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One titles. First-party releases, some of the best third-party titles and some incredible indies are all in there, offering a heady mix of gaming action.

Over the past year or so, Xbox boss Phil Spencer and Microsoft have been working to expand the scope and scale of Game Pass. A number of titles are now available on PC, and Android users can even stream a ton of Game Pass games on their mobile device via a Stadia-style expansion that launched a few months back. Game Pass will, of course, also continue to be a thing on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

But where might Microsoft go from there? The plan is clearly to get Xbox games into the hands of as many gamers as possible, regardless of whether or not they actually own an Xbox. As long as you have that Game Pass subscription, the rest is up to you.

While it might sound like the stuff of pure fantasy right now, Spencer revealed that he's actually open to bringing the service to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles. Would I give a year of my life to play the original Fable on my Switch? Yes. Yes I would.

"I love the Switch, I love PlayStation, honestly, I think they've done an amazing job as being a part of this industry," Spencer said in an interview with Game Reactor. "I'm not sure that those are the next big set of users for us, but we could be open to those discussions.

"I think for us it's all about priority, and reaching more players," the Xbox boss said of how they decide where to bring Game Pass. "So we went to PC first after Xbox, because there's just so many players there, globally, that don't own an Xbox, that we could go reach. We went to mobile next because there's a billion Android phones on the planet.

"We still have iOS to go after, we will come to iOS at some point. We're still working on some of our technology on PC for larger screens in terms of streaming, and getting to iOS, and I think once we get through that, we look at what the other options are."

Given the relationship between Nintendo and Microsoft of late, I'd suspect that Switch would be the next port of call for Game Pass - certainly ahead of PlayStation, anyway. In addition to former exclusives like Cuphead and Ori And The Will Of The Wisps hitting the Nintendo console, Microsoft has worked with Ninty on bringing Minecraft Steve and Banjo & Kazooie into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

For now, let's just look forward to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, which launch worldwide on November 10th and will support every generation of Xbox from day one. Here's hoping a few years from now PlayStation and Nintendo can say the same thing.
