'Gears 5' Launch Proves To Be First Xbox Game Pass 'Mega Hit'

It's safe to say that The Coaltion's recently-released Gears 5 is doing the business, and has well and truly put the Gears of War franchise back in the spotlight in style. The game's campaign and multiplayer have been showered with praise by critics, and it looks like that adoration is shared by gamers everywhere, if recent reports are anything to by.

Games Industry analyst Daniel 'ZhugeEX' Ahmad recently took to Twitter to reveal that Gears 5 has found massive success thanks to Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass subscription service, but noted that the latest Gears of War game's very presence on the service has in turn led to a huge spike in subscribers to Game Pass. "Gears 5 is the first mega hit on Gamepass," Ahmad wrote. "Competitive pricing and recent offers, a large library of games and access to MS 1st party has led to a high number of sign ups. MS will be hoping a lot of users stick to the service going forward."

Xbox Game Pass has long been hailed by critics as a genuinely solid deal for both hardcore and casual gamers, offering users access to a massive library of Xbox titles both old and new (as a blend of third-party AAA hits and indies) for a monthly fee. While some had previously questioned the wisdom of launching exclusive like Forza Horizon 4 and Gears 5 on the service the same day that they're available to buy separately, it's looking clearer and clearer that Microsoft made the right call. Hopefully the rest of the games on offer beyond Gears 5 will tempt this influx of subscribers to the service to stick around for a while longer.

If you needed any further proof that Gears 5 has been doing a fantastic job since launch, it was recently discovered that The Coaltion's bloody third-person shooter managed to dethrone Epic Game's Fortnite as Xbox Live's most-played game - a space the popular battle royale had occupied for well over a year before Gears 5 appeared to challenge it.

It remains to be seen just how much longer Gears 5 will be able to hold on to that top spot (Fortnite is a massive game, after all), but it's incredibly impressive that the Xbox exclusive managed to dislodge such an established title at all. You might not like it, but there's no denying that Fortnite is absolutely the biggest game in the world right now, and has been for some time.
