The original Halo trilogy will forever remain one of the best video game trilogies in the eyes of gamers everywhere. Starting on the original Xbox and ending on Xbox 360, Master Chief's epic journey was filled with terrifying enemies, heartbreaking deaths, shocking twists and of course, some truly legendary escapes.

Both Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 3 finish things off with climatic Warthog runs. In both instances players clamber into their vehicle and desperately drive to safety as everything around them is collapsing. A truly cinematic end for two truly epic games - so why didn't Halo 2 include something similar in its closing moments?

As it turns out, it was always supposed to... but developer Bungie was forced to cut it ahead of release due to time constraints. The good news is that Bungie also left the vast majority of map and relevant game files for the canned Warthog run in Halo 2, which means a team of diligent modders were able to dig up and finish what the developer started nearly two decades ago.

At this point we have to give a massive hand to modder and YouTuber black dimund (via TheGamer), who's been working to restore Halo 2's lost Warthog run by piecing together some original files, as well as scripting some of his own. That's what I call dedication.

Take a look at the finished product for yourself. While I obviously can't say whether or not this was true to Bungie's original vision for the game, it sure as hell looks to me as if it would have been one of the highlights of the game - and I mean that as the highest compliment.

As I'm sure you remember, Halo 2 had players experience two different storylines, bouncing between that of the Chief's and the Arbiter's. It was apparently during the Chief's penultimate mission, High Charity, that we were supposed to experience this particular Warthog run. While it's a shame it never made the final cut, at least black_dimund has ensured its legacy will live on forever.

If you own Halo 2 on PC you can even try out this mod for yourself and live out this hybrid of unofficial and official lost content. Just head to this link here and follow the installation instructions.
