PS5 And Xbox Scarlett Will Focus On Streaming And Feature Cameras, Report Claims

While we've already got a good idea of some of the big specs for the next-generation of Xbox and PlayStation hardware, anything more substantial on either consoles remain frustratingly elusive. I can't be the only one that wants to see some launch titles, controllers, the hardware itself, or learn something about whatever either company has planned for their consoles in terms of features.

It's all well and good telling us the PlayStation 5 will drastically cut down on loading times and that Xbox Scarlett will be the most powerful console in the world, but until we see either piece of hardware in action, these feel like fairly abstract details to me.

The good news is that the veil has been lifted somewhat - potentially. VG247 reports that a Gizmodo reader alleging to be in possession of development kits for both the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett has claimed that both consoles will have a big focus on live streaming, and come with built-in cameras.

The camera included with Xbox Scarlett is apparently the more impressive of the two, boasting 4K capabilities and 2-frame latency. Microsoft has even reportedly demoed a Snapchat-style filter that changes your surroundings to match the in-game lighting, which sounds pretty awesome. The PS5 camera, meanwhile, was simply described as using older tech.

It's worth noting that neither site has been able to verify the identity of the leaker, but that they claim to work for a studio that has access to both PS5 and Xbox Scarlett dev kits, and have been sending Gizmodo what appears to be edited images and details regarding both consoles.

This mystery developer also previously sent out what appeared to be real-world images of the leaked PS5 dev kit, and this was well before the patent was actually uncovered. We can't say for sure it's legit then, but there's certainly some weight to the information.

While live-streaming and built-in cameras are the most interesting nuggets of information, the leaker also revealed that PS5's codename is Prospero, that both consoles have very different approaches to ray tracing, and that the leap in computational power is thought to be the largest ever between generations.

Obviously, not every single feature from a development kit makes it into the final product, so even if these claims are accurate, we don't know for sure whether the next-generation of hardware will have such a big focus on streaming. I certainly wouldn't bet against it, though.
