Rare, the studio behind some of the best games on N64 and more recently Xbox One's Sea of Thieves, gave the world its first look at at its latest project tonight during X019. It's a brand-new IP called Everwild, and looks like a frankly gorgeous cross between Breath of the Wild and Monster Hunter.
"The Everwild team is focused on building an experience that allows for new ways to play in a natural and magical world," Rare studio head Craig Duncan wrote in an Xbox Wire post.
"The development team, led by executive producer Louise O'Connor, is creating something truly original and incredibly special that aims to be more than just a new IP. Everwild will give you memorable, engaging, and meaningful experiences for players everywhere to share. We cannot wait to share more with you in the future."
Check out the trailer for yourself below.
It's unclear exactly what kind of game Everwild will be at this stage, though we're getting serious multiplayer vibes based on what we've seen so far. It looks to me that players will have to team up to explore and survive in a massive open world? I could be wrong of course, but that's my read on the brief reveal trailer we got.
The project looks to be fairly early on in development, which means no release date just yet.. but I'm very much into the idea of exploring a bright, colourful fantasy world and meeting all kinds of imaginative creatures which friends.
Rare were also on hand to deliver some Sea of Thieves news, of course. Arriving November 20th as a free update, players of the whimsical pirate sim will be able to get their hands on The Seabound Soul.
The impending update features "an all-new, lore-focused Tall Tale quest for players looking to play their part in a thrilling story," as players join Captain Pendragon "to uncover the mystery of the feared ship, the Ashen Dragon, and reveal the secrets of a sinister new threat."
The update will also introduce a new weapon in the form of firebombs, which can be thrown or loaded into cannons to cause all kinds of mayhem on your nautical adventures.
Sea of Thieves never quite hit the mark for me, but Everwild? Everwild looks right up my street, thanks for asking. It's very early days, but I'll be keeping a keen eye on this one.
