100 v 1 me on Rust

Rust is finally bringing its own unique brand of survival mayhem to Xbox One and PS4. Facepunch and Double Eleven announced yesterday that the utterly bizarre (and shockingly brutal) multiplayer survival adventure will be coming to consoles in 2020. Presumably it'll remain unchanged from the PC version, which means all the butt-naked chaos we've come to expect from the game.

If you've never played Rust, odds are you've at least seen it at some point on YouTube. It's a seriously weird game, and it even by survival standards it seems to bring out the most ruthless side of most players. Check out the reveal trailer below.

In Rust, you waking up on a post-apocalyptic island, just like in pretty much any survival game. The game then demands you use your only tools (a rock and a torch) to cobble together food, water, clothes, and shelter so that you don't... you know, die. Of course, as you scramble around in the dirt naked as the day you were born, there's every chance more established players could swing by and either help or hinder your progress. They usually opt for the latter.

Oh, there's more to contend with than other players who want to loot and kill you, by the way. You'll also have to deal with hostile weather, radiation, bears, wolves, and all kinds of other things that exist solely to make you dead. Rust is not a game that wants you to succeed, let's put it that way.

There are pretty much no rules in the harsh wasteland, and the way you behave is entirely down to you. In many ways, Rust is a reflection of your truest safe. Probably. That makes it even sadder that most players in the game really will do whatever they can to get ahead and put you down, I guess.

It's unclear whether or not Rust on consoles will support crossplay with one another or on PC, but the more the merrier in my opinion. At the moment, all we know is that Rust will support worlds of up to 100 players on consoles

Rust first landed on Steam Early Access waaay back in 2013 and Facepunch has accumulated around 8 million players in that time. It'll be quite fascinating to see if there's any difference in the way Xbox One, PS4, and PC Rust players treat one another in the absence of rules, actually. I feel a social experiment coming on.
