We already knew that the Xbox Series X would boast an impressive 12 teraflops (try not to laugh) of graphical processing power as well as DirectX ray tracing support for up to 120fps - up from the usual 60fps that developers aim for on the Xbox One. But Xbox Series X's director of product management is quick to point out that graphics aren't all they're looking at: "we don't believe this generation will be defined by graphics or resolution alone."

Indeed, the lengthy article also speaks of the partnership with AMD and the work that's been done to produce improved performance on the Xbox Series X.

"Xbox Series X is the biggest generational leap of SOC [System on a Chip] and API design that we've done with Microsoft, and it's really an honor for AMD to be a trusted Microsoft partner for this endeavor," said Sebastian Nussbaum, AMD's Corporate Vice President. "The Xbox Series X is going to be a beacon of technical innovation leadership for this console generation and will propagate the innovation throughout the DirectX ecosystem this year and into next year."

Of course, we've known for a while that the Xbox Series X would be backwards compatible from day one but it looks like you'll get improvements with older games too. You should see improved load times, more stable frame rates, and higher resolutions. And, according to the post, the Compatibility team is also working on allowing you to use your Xbox One accessories and game saves on the Series X.

The Xbox Series X will also allow for "cross-generation multiplayer" allowing you to play with friends, regardless of the generation of console you're using. This will also be aided by the new Smart Delivery system which ensures that you'll be able to switch between the Xbox One and Xbox Series X on supported games. Here's an example of how it works from the glossary: "This means if you purchase the Xbox One version of a supported title, we will identify and deliver the best version of it to your Xbox One, as usual. If you decide to jump into the next generation with Xbox Series X, we will automatically provide the Xbox Series X optimized version of the game at no additional cost if and when it becomes available."

And on that note, if you own Gears 5 on Xbox One, you'll be entitled to a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X version, once it becomes available. Cyberpunk 2077 announced a similar feature a couple of weeks ago.
