Harbingers of Boom

Ever wondered how video games manage to perfectly capture some highly unusual sounds, such as explosions? Nope, me neither, but for those of you more curious than I am, developer 343 Industries has revealed the lengths the developer goes to to capture sounds for Halo Infinite.

With 85 microphones, the audio team went out into the desert to create, and record, some of the explosion sounds you'll hear in the upcoming game. This particular sound clip shows how the team buried and then detonated barrels full of the industrial explosives ANFO and TNT six feet underground. Take a look:

"Using 85+ microphones spread out across a mile, the 343 Audio Team set out to bring the BOOM in this #SoundDesignSaturday," the studio said on the Instagram post. "To create these sounds, charges of ANFO and TNT were buried under 6ft of dirt, barrels were launched or blown apart, and so much more. Be sure to give it a listen!⁣⁣"

Halo Infinite is slated to release later this year, although the precise date has yet to be confirmed.

Halo fans can now play Halo on their iPhones, and they don't even need a console to link it up to - just the new Xbox app. Currently the app - which is called Project xCloud - is in public testing mode, meaning you just need to register to make the most of the preview before the service is fully rolled out.

Halo 5: Guardians developer 343 Industries might also be recruiting for a brand new Halo game. From a recent job listing on the Microsoft careers page, it looks like the studio is advertising for a new senior producer to "help develop a new project in the Halo Universe." The advert - which went live on 3 June - intimates that the full-time position is offering developers the "chance to work on one of the most exciting and creative intellectual properties in the industry with one of the industry's most talented teams".

While you'd be forgiven for thinking that this was 343 merely hiring someone to come work on Halo Infinite, it is worth noting that previous job listings posted by the studio pertaining to Infinite specifically mention the game by name, rather than describing it as a "new project". A similar post was advertised back in November, too, and that also sought a lead producer "to help develop a new project in the Halo universe".
