We were all expecting a battle for the ages when next-gen consoles were revealed. Load speeds, game exclusivity, and prices are the hottest topics we can name, but we don't think anyone expected the aesthetics of Xbox Series S/X and the PlayStation 5 to be such a talking point.

The PS5 looks like a jet wing and EVE from WALL-E smushed into one, while the Xbox Series X looks like a fridge - which one looks better underneath a TV? New photos, however, show that the Xbox Series looked even stranger in a past life.

Fast Company shows us some of the original concept photos for what the Xbox Series could have looked like before Microsoft landed on the current designs. It looks like there were plans for a giant circle to front one of the consoles, or that circle grid we see on the Series S appearing on a bigger unit. There's even one box that looks very much like the Xbox One, a design which might be what players were originally expecting this time last year, but alas we're receiving a much blockier design.

Other images show some of the final bits and pieces we're getting familiar with - the cheese grater top of the Xbox Series X and the Series S, buttons fit for a giant hand, and the outline for a standard looking Xbox controller.

The Xbox consoles have certainly gone through many variations of looks over the years, and buyers are eagerly waiting to find out what the newest iteration looks like in their homes. Preorders have been, well, a little confused as some customers have accidentally ordered Xbox Ones in the process.

It's not like Sony has had a smooth preorder process either though, so we think we'll call it even for now. We're just waiting to try out the consoles for ourselves.
