When it comes to backwards compatible titles, the Xbox Series X has the edge over the PlayStation 5, owing to its speedier loading times.

We're rather impressed with the Xbox Series X. Though it boasts an unconventional beauty, the technical possibilities of the console are amazing, like the Quick Resume feature letting players zip at the speed of light between three to seven games that are already running. Moreover, the one terabyte solid state drive is an incredible addition to your gaming experience, leaving lengthy loading times by the wayside. And, the console is able to deliver automated high-dynamic-range rendering (HDR to you and me) and 120 frames per second on current generation titans, like Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, the PlayStation 5 is also packing a punch. The console loads from a cold boot to being in the hubbub of New York City of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in only 45 seconds. The sound of the PlayStation 4 fans would rock the walls as it attempted to cool the console during demanding gaming sessions, but its little brother has no issue. It's quiet, even while rendering wondrous ray-tracing and generating beautiful 4K resolutions at 60 frames per second. With the jargon that's punted over our heads every time either console steps into the spotlight, sometimes it's tough to tell what it actually means for you, the player.

GameSpot recently tested the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 for a load time comparison, and the results are eye-opening. To sum up, the Xbox Series X is faster than the PlayStation 5... when it comes to the current generation games that they were running. These were Arkham Knight, Destiny 2, Final Fantasy XV, Monster Hunter World, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Hardly the small potatoes of their genres, so it is a fairly reliable marker of how the consoles will perform while playing one of these or other games of a similar scale.

With Red Dead Redemption 2, there was nothing in it: the PlayStation 5 loads the game in 65 seconds, and the Xbox Series X loads the game in 64 seconds. But, with Final Fantasy XV and Monster Hunter World, the difference is very tangible. The PlayStation 5 takes 70 seconds and 51 seconds, respectively, whereas the Xbox Series X takes 48 seconds and 35 seconds, respectively. The idea that a machine could boot up a heavyweight like Monster Hunter World in just over half a minute astonishes me, honestly.

In addition, the PlayStation 5's custom 825GB SSD is faster than the one in the Xbox Series X, so these results raise eyebrows. The latter does win out when it comes to the power of the central and graphics processing units, which, in combination with its SSD, may be the deciding factor here. And, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are offering different things for different consumers. Because one loads a game faster than the other won't necessarily cause a mass cancellation of pre-orders. You do you.
