Xbox Series X Consoles Are Reportedly Shutting Down At Random

The Xbox Series X has been out for a few days now, and some users are already starting to report what sound like fairly serious issues. A thread over on the Microsoft support forums details multiple reports from customers of the next-gen console spontaneously turning itself off after just a few seconds.

As first reported by GameSpot, one user started a thread to complain of the problem. "My Xbox Series X keeps shutting down 5-10 seconds into a game loading up," wrote Able Chimp. "I've tried reinstalling the games and a full reset of the console but nothing's working."

Worryingly, it doesn't seem to be an isolated issue. Several commenters revealed that they've had the exact same technical hiccup, while GameSpot reports "at least one" of their own staff members have experienced crashes coming "anytime between the moment a game is started and roughly 20 minutes into gameplay".

"Unfortunately I have the same issue," wrote followkarma on the thread. "The console shuts down when starting some Xbox game pass games. I have been able to play some games for a bit, but the console just randomly shuts down. When I tried Celeste and Forager I had been able to play for some longer time, but unfortunately when I tried to switch to home screen the console turned off."

It's not entirely clear at this stage what might be causing these issues, although some users chimed in to offer suggestions. "I have had the same issue," JustinDafoe noted. "I found that if I had my controller paired and kept it active (just pressing random directions on the d-pad) it didn't shut down. the second I stop inputting button presses it starts the countdown where it shuts off 10 seconds later."

While this particular thread contains a handful of users claiming to have experienced this problem, it's hard to say right now just how widespread it is. We're hopeful this particular glitch is just impact a small number of new users, although Microsoft has yet to comment.

As with the launch of any new console, it's worth remembering that we will more than likely see a fair few reported hardware faults from both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. As unfortunate as it is, it's to be expected - what matters is how Microsoft responds and whether it's something easily fixed. Watch this space.
