Xbox Series X Price Leaks Via Retailer, And It's Pretty Hefty

Oof.

We now know that the Xbox Series X is set to launch in November, which is great. The problem is that we still don't actually have any idea how much Microsoft's next-gen console costs... and November is three months away. I don't know about you guys, but I actually have to budget for super-expensive next-gen consoles, so it might be nice to know how much I need to put away.

Sony hasn't been any better with the PlayStation 5, mind you. Both companies are locked in some kind of weird staring contest where neither wants to be first to announce price for fear that the other will swoop in with a lower price point. It was almost funny a few months ago, but now it's just getting boring.

The good news is that we might finally have more of an idea of what to expect from the Xbox Series X price. The bad news is that it's potentially more expensive than we'd anticipated.

Speaking on the Kinda Funny Xcast, journalist and host Alanah Pearce revealed that an anonymous source pointed her towards a retail listing that marked the Xbox Series X at a price of $599. That'd be roughly £455, though I should point out that the UK price probably wouldn't just be a straight conversion.

Take a look at the clip below for her comments, as well as the understandable reaction of one of her co-hosts to the news of the price. Thanks to The Red Dragon on Twitter for highlighting this segment.

"I did also have someone who works at a retail store DM a picture of their work screens where it said that the price of the Xbox Series was $599," Pearce explained. "And that was in their system, and he sent me a photo of that."

As others have pointed out, there's a good chance that this is just a placeholder price so that the retailer in question can store the Xbox Series X in its system. We're three months out from release after all, and you'd imagine outlets need to start getting things ready with or without crucial details like pricing.

If $599 does turn out to be the legitimate price? That's potentially asking a lot of Xbox fans, especially for a console that doesn't seem to be launching with any major first-party releases. While unconfirmed, it does look like Microsoft is planning a cheaper, less powerful model called the Xbox Series S. Perhaps it's banking on the majority flocking towards this cheaper alternative, leaving the pricier Series X for the more discerning hardcore players?

The last PlayStation 5 price leak came via a French retailer and put it at €499. The digital edition also appeared on the site, for the much cheaper price of €399. That'd put the standard and digital editions of the PS5 at roughly £447 and £360 respectively in the UK.... that wouldn't be miles away from the Xbox Series X price, although it's (once again) worth noting that the UK price might not be a straight conversion.
