As we get closer to the release of the next-gen consoles, the rivalry between Microsoft and Sony seems to be heating up once again. Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed in a recent interview that he believes the Xbox Series X will have an advantage over the PlayStation 5 when it comes to launch games and hardware.

As reported by VGC, Spencer was asked what he thought of the PlayStation 5 reveal event earlier this month. It was during this show that we got a look a number of upcoming games for the next-gen Sony console, as well as the reveal of the console design itself.

"I watched the show, I thought they did a good job," Spencer said. He also revealed that he sent Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan a congratulatory message after the event. A welcome reminder that normal people don't actually fall out over which console is better.

"As a competitor it's great to have them out there now so we kind of know what the programme is, we see the device, we see the games," he added.

"Just being honest, I felt good after seeing their show. I think the hardware advantages that we have built are going to show up as we're talking more about our games and frame rates and other things. I thought the games line-up that we're going to have at launch I felt really good about, and we got more clarity on what they're doing at their show which just helped us focus in on more of what we have, and I think that will be a strength for us at launch.

"So I thought they did a good job, I thought they do what they do very well and they did that, but when I think about the position that we're in, with the games that we're going to be able to show and how they're going to show up, and the hardware advantage that we have, I think we're in a very good position."

Microsoft is expected to share more details on the Xbox Series X at some point in July, along with some first-party game reveals and a better look at Halo Infinite in action. The company came under a lot of criticism for its May event, after it turned out the "first-look" at next-gen we were promised wasn't quite as exciting as we'd hoped it would be.

We already know that in terms of raw power, the Xbox Series X has the edge over the PlayStation 5. With that said, there's been a lot of praise aimed at the PS5's super fast SSD, and all of the exciting possibilities it offers. It'll certainly be interesting to see what Microsoft has up its sleeve, and why Spencer is so confident.
