'The Matrix 4' Actor Drops Massive Hint About Morpheus' Recasting

'The Matrix 4' Actor Drops Massive Hint About Morpheus' Recasting

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has teased a detail of his character we didn't previously know

You may already be excited for the release of The Matrix Resurrections, the fourth film in the Matrix series which is set to launch this December. As the name was revealed there was certainly an interesting implication that someone or something would come back to life, and with the trailer, it’s implied that something may be none other than Morpheus. However with a new interview with Morpheus actor, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II it seems that his character isn’t actually the Morpheus we knew.

In an interview with GQ, spotted by GamesRadar+, the actor corrected the interviewer and clarified something we hadn’t yet heard. When speaking about the character of Morpheus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II made sure to stipulate that: “the character’s called Morpheus”. This seems to imply it’s not canonically the Morpheus we saw in the original films.

Here is the trailer for The Matrix: Resurrection

He follows up by saying that: “it will make sense when it comes out” and that the character is "tonally" different. Very interesting indeed. It sounds like perhaps Morpheus is a placeholder name for a person rather than a specific person. Maybe it’s like The Doctor or James Bond in that way. Of course, all will become clear when the film is released but we’re impatient and want to uncover these secrets right now

Of course, there were other peculiar things about The Matrix 4’s trailer which we are yet to discover. There was Neo’s seemingly completely reimmersed in the Matrix and no Agent Smith. The world is a little different from when we last saw it, time has passed and we’re not sure where the characters stand. And most of all, I wonder if Neo still knows Kung-Fu, I have a feeling he’s going to need it. We’ll find all that out and more on December 22, when the film launches in cinemas and HBO Max.
