When it comes to gaming laptops, the focus tends to be on bigger machines that aim to compete with desktops. Not to eclipse them, but to compete on their own merits, as smaller, cheaper options with price tags that justify the perceived drop in quality. However, there’s something to be said for smaller laptops, and that’s where the delightful Chillblast Phantom comes in.

After multiple sessions with more powerful machines, namely the Chillblast Fnatic Flash and Defiant laptops, the 14-inch Phantom immediately stands out as a smaller, potentially more humble option. Equipped with a Samsung 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM, Intel i7 processor, Tactus PH4AQF2 motherboard, Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card and Windows 11, it’s clear this system is no slouch.

Aesthetically, the simple silver casing is understated enough to fit into any setup, including professional ones. The screen offers QHD+ resolution (2880x1800 at 90hz). As for ports, we’re dealing with an HDMI 2.0, two USB 3.0, one USB-C supporting TBT4, a USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2) supporting DP1.4, one 3.5 mm jack, and a SD/SDHC/SDXC card reader.
The first game I tried was Elden Ring via Steam. FromSoftware’s 2022 hit has become something of a benchmark test game for myself as, despite its gargantuan size, it tends to be run on most systems without issue. The Phantom kept this tradition alive, allowing me to charge around the Lands Between like a hungry Radahn. From the busy branches of the Haligtree to a bout with the ever-aggressive Margit, the game ran smooth like butter throughout.
Next up, I sampled 2020’s Resident Evil 3. I played in FHD (1080p) without ray tracing and found the game to run perfectly, even during the hectic hospital sequence where Carlos is swarmed by zombies on all sides. While this lower resolution is undoubtedly an issue for some, it’s a minor issue in order to play the game portably.

Compared to the Fnatic Flash and the Defiant - both of which weigh upwards of 2kg - Chillblast’s Phantom is a modest 1.4kg, making for an easier travel companion. Whether playing around the home or out of the house, the relatively nimble system is always a comfy fit. Of course, this comfort is directly correlated to its performance being less ambitious than the other two laptops I’ve mentioned, but it’s also worth noting that this machine is quieter, too. Even when running Elden Ring, the jet engine sounds I’d experience with the Fnatic Flash and Defiant systems wasn’t present here.
Similarly to the Defiant, I found Fortnite to be a challenge. Whereas the game hit considerable issues on the Defiant, it ran relatively well here on the Phantom, albeit with reduced visual fidelity and draw distance. There were still some moments of lag, but overall the game was easily to the same standard as it is on Nintendo Switch, i.e. playable but not luxurious.
In instances like this, it’s easy to write off the Phantom compared to the Fnatic Flash, but the price difference between the two machines has to be considered. The latter’s price begins at around £1,500, while the former starts at only £1,234.99, which is a substantial amount lower. Depending on the specs, each system’s price will rise, of course, but the initial prices are worth noting.

In terms of battery life, I started playing Epic Games’ battle royale at around 85% charge. By the time I had finished my third game - with each of which lasting over 20 minutes - the Phantom had reduced to 15%, which isn’t bad considering the battery life of other systems I’ve tried. However, you’ll want to be near a power outlet if you plan on playing longer sessions.
Overall, the Chillblast Phantom Gaming Laptop is a strong performer within its price bracket, particularly for single-player titles. While there are stronger systems out there, the smaller size makes for more comfortable portable play, and the 1TB SSD provides plenty of room for game storage. If you’re looking for PC gaming without the more expensive bells and whistles, the Phantom is a worthy choice.
