Apple Are Making Their Own Gaming Console, According To Report

Apparently, Apple could have a console in the works, and Xbox engineers might be being poached to help.

Let’s face it, it’s very unlikely that any video game news this year is going to be bigger than Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision. Honestly, we might as well just call it quits now - see you this time next year? Well, actually, it sounds like Apple might be making strides to compete, so you’re going to have to tolerate me for a while longer yet.

As reported by Game Rant, Jez Corden, a reporter for Windows Central, recently revealed that there’s talk of Apple having their own console in the works. Speaking on The Xbox Two podcast, he said that the rumour has been circulating for a while now, and while his sources may not be 100%, he believes it is something that’s currently being developed.

While you're here, be sure to check out these amazing gaming artworks, all completed on different Apple products.

According to Corden, Apple have been “poaching” engineers from Xbox to get the specifications sorted, which, if true, would certainly bode well for the final product. And as for those specifications, well, those are all very up in the air at the moment. The console could be VR-oriented, or it might not include it at all. Very helpful. He also claims that there’s been talk of the console having metaverse implementation, somehow, which is undoubtedly a very divisive proposition depending on your stance on such things. I will simply say, 'ugh'.

Obviously, this is all far from confirmed - Corden himself added that Apple explores a whole bunch of different ideas all the time (as you’d expect, really), and so even if something is, or was in the works, that doesn’t mean that it’s definitely going to happen.

Even if it’s not already happening, there’s a decent chance that Microsoft’s big news could actually spur something on. Announcements like that have a tendency to rile up the competition a bit, with all the companies trying to do better than each other, so it could be Apple’s moment to shake things up somehow. It’s hard to imagine them introducing something absolutely groundbreaking though, especially as Mac users remain lagging behind everyone else when it comes to playing PC games in any capacity (help), but we’ll just have to wait and see.
