Assassin's Creed fans agree Edward Kenway is one of gaming's greatest protagonists

Assassin's Creed's Edward Kenway has been declared as one of gaming's greatest protagonists by fans.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has been the home to many incredible gaming protagonists but many fans would agree that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has one of the greatest at its helm.

Taking us all across the globe and to a myriad of different time periods, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has been a constant educational companion growing up. Most importantly however, is the protagonist each entry follows and whether you like the cheeky rogue Ezio or the proud Connor Kenway, every fan has their favourite.

Despite this, it seems as though one protagonist is still the most popular despite starring in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag way back in 2013. The Welsh pirate (biased but I must appreciate the Welsh rep), Edward Kenway takes to the Caribbean seas in the sixth major instalment of Ubisoft’s franchise and it seems as though he has quite the fan club.

“Please give me your opinion on Edward Kenway,” posted one user to r/assassinscreed. “I started playing the Assassin's Creed franchise in 2013 so the first I played was the newest at that time, Black Flag but after all these years and completing the franchise, I never felt the same joy that Edward gave me with another MC. Am I alone or was Edward more charismatic compared to the others?”

It wasn’t long before comments came flooding in and it seems as though the original poster wasn’t alone in their thoughts. One comment read: “Definitely towards the top for me in terms of my protagonist rankings. Unlike the majority of newer protagonists, he actually had an arc going from a wealth hungry pirate to seeing the wider picture as he realises that the path he led himself down led to the death of his loved ones and very little gain, ultimately culminating in him joining the assassin brotherhood.”

Another agreed, saying: “Edward is definitely my favourite AC protagonist. It was interesting to watch his story unfold. That's partly why I chose Black Flag as my first AC game for the Switch.”

With many more entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise on the way, it will be interesting to see how Edward Kenway’s popularity will hold up. Until then, it seems as though he will be hard to beat.
