After two decades of existence, other than one or two releases, an annual Call of Duty game is about as common as your favourite character being killed off in an HBO TV series.
That being said, what perhaps isn't a common trend in the Call of Duty series, is back-to-back Modern Warfare games. Usually, each Modern Warfare entry will have a two to three-year gap with another sub-titled release arriving in between whether it be a World at War, Ghosts or Vanguard.
Rumours of the 2023 Call of Duty game being Modern Warfare-related have been floating around for a while. The most recent game in the series is Modern Warfare II, the sequel to the 2019 reboot. Judging by recent rumours, this year's release could be a Modern Warfare III reboot. What’s more, it is also believed that if MWIII arrives in 2023, it will see the return of a certain villain from the previous game.

However, those rumours are related to what could be arriving this year, but what about 2024? After all, we’ve not heard much about what could be next after the potential Modern Warfare III reboot. Well, we have some new information on Call of Duty 2024, albeit very much on the vague side. According to known ‘Call of Duty insider’, CoD_Perseus, they claim “it's been known that CoD 2024 takes place during the Gulf War since the WZM leaks.”

The Gulf War had taken place between 1990 to 1991, which saw the United States alongside its allies, the UK, France, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt defend Kuwait in the wake of the Iraq Invasion led by Saddam Hussein. So if the rumours are true and Call of Duty 2024 will be based on the Gulf War, it will likely result in another controversial entry in the series, but what else is new?
Of course, as with any rumours and speculation, we must take them with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. Hopefully, publisher Activision Blizzard will reveal details on Call of Duty 2023 within the coming weeks.
