This Friday (5 November) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will turn 15 years old. 15! That game would be doing its GCSEs right about now if it was sentient.
Since 2007, the Call of Duty series has evolved a lot. There’s been plenty more games, for a start, and visually, it’s pretty undeniable that each one has looked better than the last. I mean, just look at Amsterdam in Modern Warfare II. That’s just immaculate.

Despite all that though, there’s still a lot of love for the fourth main game in the series. On Reddit, many fans have shared that they feel its overall impact on the FPS genre was huge, and that it was all in all a “groundbreaking” game.

“When it came out, it felt borderline revolutionary, and I think it isn’t a stretch to say that impacted the FPS genre more than any other game that gen,” BangEnergyCuresED wrote.
“Modern Warfare is more than the sum of its parts. I'm not a CoD fan boy and I don't care much for the recent CoDs, but [MW] was so groundbreaking when it released (for its multiplayer as well),” added spodermawn. “It had a production quality that made you think you were part of a Hollywood movie. And the bombastic set pieces in FPS that we're used to now was really perfected by [MW].”
“People give CoD 4 s**t now for being just like every shooter, but it's THE reason that shooters are all the same now. It was a huge f**king deal at the time,” wrote The_Legend_of_Xeno. “Back then, every single shooter was WWII. People thought [Infinity Ward] were absolutely f**king crazy to put out a shooter based on modern times. But people loved it. The missions felt fresh and new. No one had played anything like All Ghillied Up before.”
