Cyberpunk 2077 sequel third-person gameplay teased by CD Projekt

Despite CD Projekt Red making the decision to develop Cyberpunk 2077 as a first-person RPG, the studio was recently asked if it had any regrets about its decision and what its plans are for the sequel.

With Cyberpunk 2077 currently having a resurgence since it was first released in 2020, talk has turned to what we can expect from its sequel, codenamed Orion, which was recently teased in the game’s expansion, Phantom Liberty. Since then, there have been reports that Cyberpunk 2 will be developed by the same team that made its predecessor and the sequel is currently “on a conceptual design level right now.”

It’s no secret that Cyberpunk 2077 has been riding a high in recent weeks but some fans are desperate for a third-person mode. Whilst this is possible with certain mods, it isn’t something that CD Projekt Red ever regretted choosing. "There are no regrets on our part," said quest director, Paweł Sasko during a recent Investor Day presentation. "What we wanted was for Cyberpunk to have its own identity and to be noticeable as this different thing. These days it's YouTube, Twitch, and screenshots that sell games, and this is the way one can use to show that identity and individuality to players."

Sasko continued: "I wanted to say that the first-person perspective is the main characteristics for Cyberpunk and its perception by the players too. It's also noticeably different from The Witcher, and this helped us craft the product identity as such."

The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red’s other project, is a third-person RPG which led fans to believe Cyberpunk 2077 would follow suit. Although that wasn’t the case, the team still hasn’t ruled it out for Project Orion, saying “we’re yet to see.”

Whether or not Cyberpunk 2 will be first or third person remains to be seen when the sequel releases sometime in the not-so-close future. However, if you are desperate for more of Night City, a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action adaptation was recently announced from the producers of Mr. Robot.
