Disney's Lion King was an 'absolute nightmare' as a kid, fans agree

Gather around, my friends. It’s time for a trip down memory lane. When it comes to gaming, so many of us have childhood favourites.

For me, my earliest memories are of playing the PlayStation 1. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon, and Toy Story 2 were all staples for little Kate. I’m sure you have your own list. Sure, these games trigger lovely feelings of nostalgia, but they may also bring forth an ounce of frustration. Let’s be honest. It’s hard to be good at gaming when you’re a kid. As much as I adored the Crash Bandicoot franchise, it’s safe to say that I never actually completed an entry until later life. Fans of Disney’s The Lion King feel exactly the same way, labelling it as an ‘absolute nightmare’ of a release.

I’m talking about The Lion King game of course, not the film. Released back in 1994 for the Genesis and Super NES, The Lion King was a side-scrolling platformer that saw you play as Simba throughout the events of the story established in the film. Well, over on Reddit, users have been discussing gaming’s most difficult boss fights, and I’m surprised by just how much - out of every game out there - The Lion King cropped up as an answer.

“Disney's Lion King on the SNES. Absolute nightmare game as a kid,” wrote one user. “I didn’t even like the movie, my little brother did and it was his game, but it was so hard [it] triggered some revenge part of my brain. I had to beat that damn game. It’s the most impressive part of my resume to this day,” added another.

Others added that Tarzan and Aladdin were just as difficult too. Disney really wanted to put us through our paces back then. I can attest though that Disney’s latest release, Disney Illusion Island, is a complete and utter delight and you should really check it out if you’re on the lookout for a wholesome, low stakes Metroidvania.
