Dr Disrespect says Call Of Duty has forgotten about gameplay and only cares about crossover skins

Is the Dr right about Call of Duty?

The Call of Duty series is one of the most popular and lucrative video game franchises of all time and this year's release will surely be no exception to that rule.

Since its inception in 2003, we’ve been treated to a new Call of Duty entry on a near-year basis with one or two stop-gaps. Whether fans pick up the latest game for the single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer or perhaps even Zombies, Call of Duty often sits firmly at the top of the sales charts.

Over the years the Call of Duty multiplayer has evolved into something even more mainstream, especially with the introduction of the free-to-play battle royale Warzone in March 2020. Being a free-to-play title, Activision goes extra heavy on monetization to entice players to pick up the latest skins.

Activision has even implemented some snazzy crossover skins featuring collaborations with the likes of Amazon series The Boys and Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft. Heck, there’s even skins for football legend Lionel Messi and musician, Nicki Minaj. This leads us to today’s topic of discussion.

Popular content creator, Dr Disrespect claims that the Call of Duty series has forgotten about gameplay and that it only cares about crossover skins. To be fair, he might be at least some part right. Sure, of course, the developers care about making any game the best that it can be. After all, it’s the developer's reputation that is on the line. However, presumably, when it comes to the perspective of a publisher, popular skins can bring in big money.

As reported by Dexerto, while on the topic of the new Spawn skin in Modern Warfare II/Warzone, the Dr said: “How much do you think it cost them to get Spawn in there? Like a million or something? And then they put the production into that video. They’re making high-level production video pieces on new skins in the game!”

He continued: “The state of this industry, I don’t know where we’re at, man. It’s not what I grew up with. It was literally about playing the games and the fun aspect of interacting with games, but now people are getting hyped off high-production video pieces. We need to bring the culture of this industry back.”

In related news, a new trailer for Dr Disrespect's new game has dropped and it actually looks pretty sick, and the file size for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III has been revealed and it might wreck your console.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will be released on 10 November 2023 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
